Chapter Thirteen

Detective Lys Grist was having some success doing what she’d been hired to do. She needed to prove that Sparky had been nowhere near Goodland, Kansas, when his mother had been shoved to her death. Lys was making some progress on that front.

The second responsibility she had accepted would likely be a lot more difficult to accomplish; she had to find the evidence necessary to prove that someone, likely Kal Graves, was the real killer. With the information she had gained, mostly from Rick Granberry, the trucker who had inadvertently hauled Sparky for many miles, she headed to Goodland. The most important thing now was to prove Sparky was innocent.

She also had another concern. Alfred had called to tell her that Sparky’s siblings had gone missing and the media had named Sparky as the prime suspect. She knew that Sparky being involved was simply not possible. Regardless, she was very concerned about the two of them. Even though Alfred had not hired her to find the younger children, she felt compelled to attempt to find them as well.

When she drove into Goodland, she went straight to the police station. She was not at all sure how she would be received, but she always tried to work closely with local authorities—when they would let her. She identified herself to the receptionist and asked to speak with someone involved in the investigation involving the disappearance of Sparky Graves. She was stalled for nearly an hour but did not leave or back down. Finally, an officer by the name of Lawrence Snepper approached and introduced himself.

“I’m handling the investigation of the wanted killer Sparky Graves,” he said coldly. “And I don’t welcome the interference of people like you and Brad Hagen.”

Lys was taken aback. She knew Brad well. In fact, she was very fond of him. They’d worked together on a case and had corresponded regularly since then. He’d even flown to Salt Lake twice and taken her out. She felt a shiver of delight when she heard his name.

She looked at the officer’s angry face. “I am not trying to interfere. I want to help if you will let me. I have solid evidence that Sparky Graves did not kill anyone.”

“I have the investigation under control, lady. I do not need your help,” he said, his face slightly flushed. “Believe me, I have solid evidence that Sparky is a killer, and I intend to find him and bring him to justice.”

Lys shook her head. This was not the reception she had hoped for. In an attempt to keep this visit from being a total bust, she said, “I would like to speak to your supervisor.”

“Won’t happen. He’s out of town.”

“Then let me talk to the chief of police,” she suggested.

“Nope. He’s not here either. Sorry, lady, but you’ll have to leave now. And I am warning you to refrain from interfering in my investigation.” Before she could reply, he turned and briskly walked away.

Back in her black Tahoe, she sat and pondered the altercation she had just experienced.
